Abandoned Eriksdal Train Tunnel
https://preview.tinyurl.com/Eriksdal-Tunne
An old overgrown train track and tunnel with an intriguing history hide close to one of Stockholm's most popular bathhouses.   The old industry track was built between 1925 and 1940.   It stretches from the top northeastern tip of the Södermalm and arcs to the southwest.   It begins near the harbor, as the idea was that wounded men arriving via ship to the harbor could be ferried away to an underground disaster center hidden beneath the hospital.

America’s Train Fans are having One of the Best Weeks of their lives
https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/big-boy-locomotive-route-and-stops
Thousands of train fans and history buffs are making a pilgrimage this week to Wyoming and Utah, to see the world’s largest steam locomotive run for the first time in nearly six decades. On May 1, the Union Pacific completed an extensive overhaul of Big Boy No. 4014, one of 25 such locomotives built by the American Locomotive Company in the 1940s, and a behemoth of a steam engine that many train lovers had thought was too big to ever run again.

BVMRRA is a loose-knit group of HO-scale enthusiasts who got together to build a modular HO-scale layout. We began in 1998 when Jeff Cermin made the suggestion that we should have a modular layout in the Bryan/College Station area. Who knew that four corners and four six-foot modules forming a 10' by 22' layout would grow into a modular layout capable of filling a 40' by 40' room?

One of the World’s Largest Steam Locomotives Is About to Make a Triumphant Return
https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/where-can-i-see-big-boy-steam-locomotive
Seventy years after the First Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869, the steep Rocky Mountains of Wyoming and Utah were still giving the Union Pacific Railroad trouble.   Despite having massive steam engines, the Union Pacific, one of the biggest railroads in America, still struggled to move heavy freight trains over the mountains and would often have to use multiple locomotives to get trains to their destination.   This practice required more workers and more fuel.   In 1940, the Union Pacific’s mechanical engineers teamed up with the American Locomotive Company to build one of the world’s largest steam locomotives, a class of engine simply known as "Big Boy".

Railroads: A Long And Storied History Of America By Rail
http://www.american-rails.com/
The earliest American railroads in this country date back to the New Jersey Railroad Company of 1815 chartered by Colonel John Stevens.   This line was ultimately never constructed and while small gravity and mule-powered roads popped up here and there in the eastern United States it was the coming of the steam locomotive that truly allowed railroads to prosper.  In August of 1829 Horatio Allen tested an English-built steamer named the Stourbridge Lion in Pennsylvania and the rest, as they say, is history.
